Bristol Scout C

role : fighter

first flight : Scout A : februar 1914 operational : Februar 1915

country : United-Kingdom

design : F.S.Barnwell

production : Scout A : 1 Scout B : 2 Scout C 161 aircraft

general information : For it’s time the Scout A was a modern and streamlined aircraft. On 23 Februar 1914 Harry Busteed flew at 153 km/hr. At the Olympia Aro Show in March 1914 it was the centre of interest. At that moment it still carried the name of Baby Biplane. After the show a wing was fitted with 7.49m span and with this it reached 157 km/hr. The aircraft was sold for 400 pound sterling to lord Carbery. It was redesignated as Scout A. Carbery replaced the 80 HP Gnome by a 80 HP Le Rhone engine and with this he reached 161 km/u.

Carbery participated in July 1914 in the London – Paris airrace but ended in the Chanal and the plane could not be recovered from the sea. In the mean time work had started to built 2 Scout B’s. These differed little from the Scout A. At the start of WWI these had not yet flown. They were confiscated by the war office and consigned to 3rd and 5th RFC Squadron and given registration nrs. 633 en 648. Experiments were carried out with oblique firing carabines. A German airplane was intercepted and hit by bullets but it was not shot down (olr1054). The Scout B performed well and in november 1914 additional orders were placed, these were indicated as Scout C and first delivered Februar 1915.

The Scout C was nice to fly and higly manoeuvrable it only lacked proper armament. Soon pilots took with hem pistols or carabines and on some Scout’s a machinegun was fixed that could shoot oblique past the propellor disc.

Dispite this difficult way of shooting there were some pilots who managed to shoot down an enemy plane. The well-known pilot Lanoe Hawker shot down 3 German armed 2-seat Albatros aircraft. Hij used the unarmed BE’s as bate.

Some RNAS Scouts carried Ranken darts for anti-zeppelin missions or four small

bombs under the fuselage.

The cockpit was very small and a man of normal posture just fitted in.
